Ambassador Victor J Gauci, diplomatic service pioneer has passed away.

Gauci started his career as a public officer and joined the diplomatic service in the Independence. He will remembered for his central role when Malta was elected in the United Nations Security Council in 1983/84. Gauci was also represented Malta in the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe.

His career lasted 40 years, living for 20 years in the United Nations between New York and Geneva. He was the ambassador for Malta in China and the High Commissioner in Australia. He served as a secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before retiring in 1996.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent condolences to the Gauci family.
