A memorial stone at the War Reporters Memorial in Bayeux, Northern France now also carries the name of slain investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The slain journalist was honoured at the Reporters Memorial.

Matthew Caruana Galizia son of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and her sister Corinne Vella were present at the unveiling of a memorial stone by Christophe Deloire, the secretary general of Reporters Without Borders.

Families of Daphne Caruana Galizia and Gauri Lankesh were invited to the cermony that paid tribute to journalists who were killed in the past year.

The activity was held as part of the week-long Bayeux-Calvados-Normandy Awards for War Correspondents in the 12th ceremony that paid tribute to journalists.

Gauri Lankesh was gunned down outside her home on 5 September 2017. She edited a tabloid newspaper Lankesh Patrike in which she defended women’s rights and condemned the caste system. She also criticised Hindu nationalists and conservatives.

Malta ranked 65th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2018 World Press Free Index.

Vigils on Tuesday

Various vigils are planned to mark the one year since the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom and the German journalist union Deutscher Journalisten-Verband (DJV) are organizing a vigil outside the Embassy of Malta in Berlin at 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Occupy Justice and manueldelia.com are organising a silent gathering at Bidnija at 2.30pm followed by a mass in suffrage of Daphne Caruana Galizia at St Francis Church, Valletta at 6pm ending with a vigil at the once makeshift memorial for the journalist.

A vigil in London will be organised in the courtyard of St James’s Church opposite the Malta High Commissioner at 7pm. The vigil is organised by PEN International, RSF and Index on Censorship.

A vigil in Rome is planned for Tuesday at 10am in front of the Embassy of Malta in Rome. The vigil is organised by Usigrai, Articolo21, NoBavaglio network, FINSI, and the Giulia Journalist Association. A letter sent in by Corinne Vella will be read on the day.

A vigil is also being organised in Brussels on Tuesday at noon in front of the Residence Palace.
