Eurostat statistics are indicating that Malta has received the third highest number of asylum request applications when compared to its population.

Cyprus and Greece are the two countries ahead of Malta in the ranking. The countries which received the least amount of applications were Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Estonia and Latvia. In 2018, the European Union received 1,133 asylum applications for every 1,000,000 EU citizens.

According to Eurostat, 580,800 persons applied for asylum within an EU member state in 2018. This amount compared to an 11% reduction from the 2017 figures.

Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi citizens topped the list of asylum seekers by nationality.
