Malta has signed up to a key anti-discrimination agreement for women.
During the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the Minister for European Affairs and Equality Helena Dalli, signed and ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
By signing up to the Protocol, this has given further agency to the CEDAW Committee which works towards providing suggestions and recommendations towards the rights which are promoted through the CEDAW convention.
This marks the latest in a chain of ratifications aimed at creating gender equality in Malta. The most prominent being the Istanbul Convention which is now fully translated into Maltese law and policy.
In addition to signing and ratifying the treaty, there is also a consultation ongoing over gender equality in Maltese legislation which is set to close on the 8th April.
